Shot Reverse Shot & The 180 Degree Rule

Shot reverse shot allows editing to create a smooth conversation, changing from one face to another. It could also be used at high speed to create a dramatic feel, or in a slow speed to create a sense of suspense.
Here is a photograph example of this from a Dr Who videoclip, which has been screenprinted to show the use of shot reverse shot.

The 180 degree rule is where the camera stays on one side of the characters (the 180 degree line). This stops the characters from changing sides, therefore keeping continuity.
